Today I was inspired by the following post to write: “‘My generation doesn’t need anymore apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, or teachers…We need FATHERS AND MOTHERS!” Where are the Elijah’s??? There’s an entire Elisha generation waiting on you to pour into us!’
Josh Wyatt, a Millenial”

Elijah was a major prophet of Israel who mentored Elisha to be his successor. Elijah imparted a double portion of his mantle/legacy when Elisha was granted the privilege of observing Elijah’s sudden departure from Earth (one of only two recorded in Scripture who was taken to Heaven without first dying (2 Kings 2:1-14); Enoch was the other (Genesis 5:21-24; Hebrews 11:5)). Both Enoch and Elijah were known as intimate friends who walked with Jehovah God, along with David, who was considered to be a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22).

Elijah represents the Holy Spirit poured out on a generation in such a profound manner that the hearts of the fathers are turned toward their children, and the hearts of the children are turned toward their fathers, and the land is neither cursed nor destroyed (Malachi 4:5-6). Sounds like the heart cry of the millennial in the opening paragraph. Elijah represents the vastly needed spiritual mothers and fathers in the midst of this current fatherless and floundering generation, whose foundations over the past 50+ years have been built on the foolishness of man and sinking sand. When rains, floods, torrents, and winds come against foolish foundations, the fall is great and complete (Matthew 7:26-27). Elijah represents a world wide move of Holy Spirit through mature (pursuing spiritual perfection) spiritual mothers and fathers who have done all to stay the course of pressing toward the goal of the heavenly prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus, irregardless of the cultural tide; who are standing ready to mentor and impart a double portion on behalf of a generation whose hearts are about to be turned toward their Heavenly Father (Philippians 3:12-16). Elijah represents spiritual mothers and fathers who will build the foundations of this up and coming generation on the supernatural Spirit of Wisdom in such a profound way that rains, floods, torrents, and winds coming against them will not prevail because they are standing firm in Christ who IS the Rock (Matthew 7:24-25)!

What exactly do spiritual mothers and fathers look like? A personal perspective: from the moment of conception, we knew this was our highest calling for parenting our amazing gifts of three children on this Earth. We also knew this was our highest calling for adopting three additional children (siblings) from Guatemala. From the onset, grounding them in the Word, their identity in Christ, worship, prayer, and intimate relationship with their Heavenly Father was first and foremost. Providing for, protecting, and nurturing their physical, emotional, educational, and every other need was a given in the midst of the spiritual intent as parents. Additionally, we were led from their earliest of years, to identity and nurture their unique giftings, talents, and callings (natural and spiritual), and to provide the necessary avenues for each one to be equipped/skilled with excellence in their God-given abilities.

Their father did his absolute best to demonstrate our Heavenly Father’s unconditional love, provision, listening ear, covering and boundaries for their well-being and character development, as well as spiritual disciplines and virtues. Their mother did her absolute best to take care of every physical, educational, spiritual, emotional, and social need to the best of her ability, and prayerfully, each of her children would say she did it ‘over the top.’ Neither parent did it perfectly, but both walked it out lovingly, intentionally, purposefully, and wholeheartedly, with Holy Spirit in the power of the Word leading throughout (or with the Word in the power of the Spirit – both apply). Our Heavenly Father alone sees the big picture – the good and perfect plans He alone has ordained – for each and every child. It is in His leading and in His Word alone that each one will arrive at the Kingdom destination they are called to to arrive at, lead with, and walk out to His glory.

If we, as parents, do not take the intentional and purposeful time it requires to daily search out Holy Spirit leading and the Word on behalf of each precious child, it is simply far too easy to let the extra-curricular activities, schools, churches, peers, entertainment, immaturity, self-centeredness, distractions, bunny trails, traditions, and alluring strategies of the kingdom of darkness determine the course. We are now living in a such a time, where precisely that reality has transpired for far too many, and sadly, multitudes do not even see it, hear it, or understand it; far too many are blindly/deafly allowing the blind/deaf to lead their families into even deeper blindness/deafness.

As a mother and father, we daily parented with extreme intentionally at an immense cost (Matthew 10:34-46; Luke 14:26-33). We purposed throughout to make our ceiling our children’s floor; to impart to them a double portion/legacy for their own calling in this life. Their double portion focused more on the Word, Holy Spirit, true identity/Christ’s character in them, and giftings/callings equipped/skilled with excellence for His glory, far surpassing anything financial, cultural, social, educational, or any other earthly focus the world would deem important or necessary. We did not do it perfectly, but we did it wholeheartedly.

We immensely love our now adult children beyond words, are incredibly thankful for our many parenting years, and are humbly proud of who each one is/how they are walking out their callings in this life (the youngest has yet to say, ‘yes’ to the Kingdom call on his life). Each one has been equipped to lead/is leading on behalf of the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. We are now entering the season where our latter years will be greater than our former years; where Isaiah 54 and Joel 2 has and will manifest from the unseen to the seen realm.

To this millennial generation needing/searching for spiritual mothers and fathers to pour into them, our response is, “Here we are, Lord, send us!” As the eyes of the Lord search to and fro to support a generation whose hearts are completely His, a generation whose focus is on the King of kings in all His glory, lovingkindness, compassion, mercy, justice, humility, sonship, and infinitely more, we say, again, “Here we are, Lord, send us.”
